Bristol-Myers Squibb, WALLINGFORD, CT

VALUE DELIVERED

Bristol-Myers Squibb’s mission is “to bring needed medicines to patients worldwide as quickly as possible.” This facility demands 100% uptime. A power outage could mean the loss of many years of research work; any downtime at all is unacceptable.

SCOPE OF WORK

At the Bristol-Myers Squibb research facility, NEMSI is responsible for over one million square feet of research space, managed by 18 on-site NEMSI employees. In 2001, we retrofitted an extensive control system that turned 169 laboratories into separate environmental zones with accelerated air exchange flows. By placing sensors and controls in every laboratory, Bristol-Myers Squibb estimates that we generated an average energy cost savings of $240,000 per year, and that sum does not even include the labor cost savings also achieved!

BACKGROUND

This pharmaceutical research facility houses biological and chemical research laboratories that include sophisticated robotics. We have installed an extensive system of remotely-controlled Direct Digital Control (DDC), life safety, and card accesssystems, as well as closed-circuit in-house and perimeter security systems. We also operate and maintain the facility’s own central utility plant, which contains 8,600 tons of cooling capacity and a five megawatt co-generator.
